Could someone please be so kind as to fill me in on what the heck it is good for?

What does it do?

Is it worth it even to install it?

By using it will increase my ratings on Alexa???

Does it work like Digg or is it just another browser?

Ok so I haven't enough coffee this am so shoot me

Hi Wendy...

THat is awesome to have the alexa toolbar! it can be used to help
bring up the websites stats that you visit! and belong to! So, just by
you having the Alexa toolbar... You are helping Apsense and every
other business or site that you frequent or promote...

Also... if you want to know more about a webstie you can Alexa search
and get stats on it's popularity etc... the owners name and address if
they honestly listed their name and address... if you have your own site
it's a great meter of where you are on the internet and they do it by
the category of website you're in... i think!

you can compare APSense to DirectMatches to FriendsWin to ??? and
see how they've been doing on the graph... the ups and down of internet
business...

so, think of it as an investment in what you do, by having it installed on
your computer!

Hi Wendy,

Hmm - yes it is useful to find stuff about other sites and it does have a ranking system. You can also access the same information going to alexa.com too

There is a fair amount of discussion about the valaidty of Alexa ratings. I believe for very large businesses with mega traffic they do have some meaning, but, in opinion, for smaller sites they are totally irrelevant.

WHY?

Firstly because they only reflect the visits to the site by people with Alexa bars installed - which leaves out a large number of the computer owning population.

Secondly, because - empirically - i have observed that although our own alexa rating has had all time highs - it bears no relation wahtsoever to the amount of business we do through the web site. The best patches we have had have often occured when our alexa rating was rock bottom and visa versa.

Google rankings yes do have importance - but Alexa - as it is so heavily influenced by external factors - like traffic excahnges and the existance or not of toolbars - not for many people.

Just my observations
