The Essence of Fashion Photographyby Sophia Cruz BUSINESS
What comes to your mind when you read the word fashion photography? All the glitz and glamour, the world so full in your imagination that you almost consider it to be a fairy tale. You see models posing for the camera on television, billboards and runway. The truth though, behind this fairyland, is a lot of hard work and struggle. Reaching the heights where most of the industry's top fashion photographers are, takes years of practice, hard work and dedication.
This genre of dslr photography is dedicated to displaying clothing and other fashion items but was never dependent solely on DSLRs. Fashion photography originated as early as 1856, in the early days of capturing images on paper. Digital cameras photography has although elevated it's level and definitely has added more significance.
There are numerous aspiring photographers who send their pictures to established photographers, competitions and different platforms waiting for their clicks to be selected. Following are some of the general and dslr photography tips you can follow to take the first few steps into this world.
1) Study your subject
The first lesson to be learnt is to study what you want to do. Be it photography or any other sphere, an in depth knowledge is a must to start off as a professional. Read as many fashion magazines as possible. Buy books from stores or online which are dedicated to your subject. The books are not really expensive and therefore getting hands on them is not a difficult task. To start practicing, a pre-requisite is a decent camera, a tripod and lighting system. One of the most important and overlooked fact is that you should carry extra batteries and always have plenty of extra film or memory for that matter.
2) Have a portfolio
You should always focus on having a portfolio. It is good to start assembling your work together and keep it with you always. You never know when an opportunity will knock your door and you have to show your work. Carrying your work with you means taking along all the preparation for the big break you always wanted. 4 X 5” sharp and vibrant images showcasing different types of techniques will be a perfect fit. If you have your work published in a magazine or a newspaper, be it local or any other, it is always great to just tear it from the magazine and keep it along. It works as a great addition. A minimum of 20 photographs will suffice.
Showcasing your talent online is a great option seeing the current scenario. Setting up a simple website or sending your work for online competitions helps tremendously with getting the work seen which is the best part.
The important part is to portray your personality in your work. That is the first and the last thing that anyone wants to see. A photograph speaks a thousand word about the photographer.
