Know the pros and cons of Waxing

by Camili Smith Medical Consultant
Waxing is a temporary procedure to remove hair. Unlike shaving or removal creams, it removes hair from roots or base. Thus, even if hairs grow back eventually, the span is 2-9 weeks which is much higher than that of previous two techniques.

Waxing can be done on various body parts. It can be a continuous procedure or done in one session.
• Eyebrow waxing:-it is usually done to shape the eyebrows. It needs to be repeated within 4 weeks else the eyebrows will be misaligned.
• Chest waxing: - This technique is used to remove excessive hair from the chest.
• Underarm waxing: - This technique is more common to women and it is done in several sessions.
• Bikini waxing: - There is a surge in demand for this type of technique during summers. Among them, Brazilian waxing is the most favorite.
• Body waxing: - This technique is usually administered for men. It includes removal of hair from legs, arms, shoulders and back.
• There are other types of waxing which are intended to remove unwanted hair on knees, back and feet. However, they are not much popular.

The Procedure
In waxing procedure, the wax is evenly spread on the area where hairs have to be removed. A cloth strip is then pressed on the area and the wax is allowed to cool. When it becomes cool and hard, the cloth strip is pulled forcefully in the direction opposite to hair growth. Hand pressure is applied on the area to reduce discomfort and pain.

The Pros:-
Waxing usually doesn’t cause any skin damage or irritation. It is faster, more convenient and simple. It can be administered at home. Hair growth is slower and newly grown hairs are of finer quality.

The Cons:-
If you are allergic to wax, you may develop irritation and soreness of the skin. The process in painful and can cause harm to sensitive skin. Plus, a specific hair length is necessary else they can be broken during the process. In some cases, bleeding and infection are also possible. This procedure is messy and can be annoying for first timers.

This technique should not be used when the skin is irritated or sunburned. Those having varicose veins should not apply this procedure on legs. It should not be used to remove hair grown on nipples, men genitals or inside the nose and ears.
When to avoid waxing?
1. Recent Intake of alcohol or coffee
2. Taking any prescription medicines especially antibiotics
3. Diseases like lupus, AIDS, Rosacea
4. Cancer therapy like radiation in progress
5. Pregnancy

Professional help is available for those who find this procedure complicated. There are several DIY waxing kits available in the market so that it can be administered at home.
