Home repair grants are available to low-income families, veterans, and other eligible individuals

Home repair grants are given to low-income families to offset the costs of home repairs and improvements, which could be considerable expenses for them. Although highly competitive, a large number of home repair grants are offered by federal, state, and local governments, and other private entities, in order to defray the pricey home repairs. The fund is available to federally recognized Native American tribes or an Alaskan Native, and your income should not exceed 150% of the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Poverty Guidelines.   

SAH and TRA Grants by Department of Veteran Affairs   

Home Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) by HUD provides grants to state and local governments that can be used for home repairs and creating affordable housing options for low-income households. Veterans who are disabled can apply for home repair grants to make modifications to a home for them to be able to live independently. This grant money can be used to modify an existing home or for repairs on the purchase of a new home. Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is designed to help veterans who have service-connected disabilities. VA Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) grant is available to veterans who are temporarily living in a family member’s home that requires modification.   

Community Development Block Grants (CDBG)  

Weatherization Assistance Program by the US Department of Energy (DoE) provides home repair grants to low-income households to increase their home’s efficiency. Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) provides home repair grants to communities to fund a variety of activities, including housing rehabilitation. CDBG allocations take into account a jurisdiction’s population, and the proportion of households living in poverty, among others.
