Lung failure, also known as respiratory failure, occurs when the respiratory system is unable to adequately perform its primary function of oxygenating the blood and removing carbon dioxide. There are two main types of respiratory failure: hypoxemic respiratory failure and hypercapnic respiratory failure. Various conditions can lead to lung failure, and these can be broadly categorised into the following: Obstructive Lung Diseases: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): This includes conditions like chronic bronchitis and emphysema, which cause airway obstruction and impaired airflow. Restrictive Lung Diseases: Interstitial Lung Diseases: These conditions involve inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue, reducing the lungs' ability to expand and contract properly. Kyphoscoliosis: Abnormal curvature of the spine can restrict lung expansion. Infectious Diseases: Pneumonia: Inflammation of the lung tissue caused by infection, leading to impaired gas exchange. Bronchitis: Inflammation of the bronchial tubes, affecting airway function. Pulmonary Vascular Disorders: Pulmonary Embolism: Blockage of pulmonary arteries by blood clots, leading to decreased blood flow to the lungs. Pulmonary Hypertension: High blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries, which can strain the right side of the heart and affect oxygenation. Neuromuscular Disorders: Conditions such as muscular dystrophy or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) can weaken the respiratory muscles, making it difficult to breathe effectively. Trauma: Chest injuries or injuries to the lungs can impair their function. ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome): A severe inflammatory response to injury or infection that can lead to fluid buildup in the lungs, affecting oxygen exchange. Toxic Inhalation: Exposure to harmful gases, chemicals, or fumes can damage the lungs and lead to respiratory failure. Drug Overdose: Certain drugs, particularly opioids, can suppress respiratory drive and lead to respiratory failure. Other Conditions: Cystic Fibrosis: A genetic disorder affecting the respiratory and digestive systems. Lung Cancer: Tumours in the lungs can obstruct airways and impair lung function.
