What is the best way to protect your WP blog from being hacked?

After getting hacked five times, I did a little experimenting myself and came to the unsupported conclusion that what you really need to do is practice backups (easy to learn), install the basic security steps to raise your fruit up a little (stop being low hanging fruit for hackers) and most hackers are going to pass you by. At least it reversed the trend for the last several months for me. If anything does go wrong, I can restore it from backup. So far, so good.

Its a long read, but in the end you will learn the proper methods of securing wp.
