Wood chip or chip wood walls?

I have a painter/decorator in at the moment and he's just told me what we thought was plasterboard for the walls is actually wood chip or chip wood or something, just wondering what the best fittings are to secure shelves to a wall? Also if anyone has any advice or experience with these types of walls just wondering what your thoughts are on them?
