the use of quotations in your content can penalise your website if not done right.
most seasoned webmasters will know the safe way to do this... for those that do not understand let me explain. quotations of content are fine to use but either as an excerpt of sentenced or paragraphed text from the source and then a link to the source. not a copy n paste of the full content of the source page or in some cases multiple pages enclosed in block quote. if you use that kind of practice it may be seen as simple duplicated content which will effect your page ranking.

Harry you are very wrong (sorry to be blunt hope its not offensive). Google is not in bed with wealthy companies and doesn't attack some people more than others. The things they do are systematic at best. I have seen top websites pulling in millions instantly blacklisted from google - syndic8 comes to mind from a few years back in fact.
What it seems you are noticing is what I briefly made a passing statement about "there are exceptions to this rule".

Bruce, I agree and disagree at the same time if that is possible. Now this is off the top of my head so the sites might be right but there are some that do it.
Huffington Post, Drudge and many more are multi million dollar sites and all they have done is use duplicate content. Now I don't visit these sites as I once did for research but they did it at some point I believe.

When I opened this topic I was actually intending on challenging what you say, because I thought you were going to say there is an improper use of the blockquote tag.
However duplicating a vast amount of content is basically improper usage no matter what tag you try to use with it. There are exceptions to this rule, but its not something most people should ever do.
