David Brackett obtained his MFA in fabrics, with honors, in 1990 from the University of Kansas. He went to the University of Michigan from 1979 to 1985, where he researched interweaving and also fabric layout, as well as fine art history. Bracket has a bachelor in zoology from the University of Michigan (1977).
