Knowing when its time to get another car ...
It's important to realize that when your car has finally gotten to the point where all the maintenance in the world is going to cost you more money than getting a new/used car - you should make the choice to replace it.
I'm at that step myself. My car, which I absolutely love, has now become more of an expense than an asset. It needs to much money and new parts put into it to keep it any longer. She does have 232,000 miles and has been very reliable to me.
I find that it's hard to get rid of a car sometimes, when you've become attached to the memories that the car has attached to it. I have been dealing with that too. I've had the car 5 and a half years.
You have to accept the fact that it can no longer help you, but is more of a burden. You have to deal with the fact that you will still have the memories, but will no longer have the vehicle. I have accepted this and need to move on. I am now borrowing a car for work, and will now begin to save money for a new used one.
