We all go through it. I write down when good things happen to me and then when I am having a down day, I just review my date book and it makes me realize how blessed and fortunate I am.
You touched on one of the most helpful ways of dealing with personal discouragement: Gratitude. No matter how bad things get, there are some things you can still be grateful for. Being grateful puts you on track to receiving even more of what you are already grateful for.
Here are 2 pages that I came across that maybe of some further help:

Terry, Glad you liked the articles. I thought they were excellent too when I first came across them. I hope your niece will find them helpful.

Fred, I read both articles and was very impressed. I just sent a copy to a niece who is going through reconstructive surgery right now.
Both articles are excellent.
Thanks,
Terry
