Little known outside the French-speaking world, La Reunion is a lush volcanic island nestled between Madagascar and Mauritius in the south-west Indian Ocean. With an area roughly a third of that of metropolitan Melbourne, the island is a tiny, tropical remnant of French imperial expansion, discovered by the Portuguese in 1502 but under French control since 1642.
