I have a dilemma....
At present my new book is available as a download, free of charge. I am doing a real world book launch on August 26th at which time I will start to charge $5 for the download (the physical book retails at $17.50)
That was until....
In my meanderings around the Internet I came across a site where I can effectively get people to pass my offer to their friends (you know word of mouth, via email) and as a reward download my e-book for free.
Great idea. My initial thinking was that I could get people to download my e-book for free IN ANTICIPATION that they would want to keep reading the story and buy books 2 and 3 in the trilogy.
This new concept has the potential to get that marketing strategy really up and running by creating a viral marketing effect across the Internet
HOWEVER, if I do employ that particular strategy I will miss out on (who knows how many) sales of my ebook.
My dilemma then
On the one hand do I sell my e-book to a small number of people who choose that over the physical version
On the other hand do I forgo those initial sales in anticipation of picking up a much larger audience with my "back end" sales of the other two books?
Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on the matter pulleezzzz.

Thank you all for your input. This is great! I will try to respond to each (if appropriate) in the one post....
Thank you San for your suggestion of not either/or but both. In fact I have changed my website to include the possibility of purchasing the book in physical form through the company who is handling that for me.
BJ and Chuck....I appreciate your suggestion and offer of assistance. This is my first venture into the realm of FICTION and am finding that jvs work better with n

Hi Graham,
Like BJ states an affiliate program would work quite nicely and bring you in more money that a totally free download.
There is another marketing tactic I have seen used, that has put books on the best seller list, which involves jv gifts. A collection of gifts acquired by joint venture partners is given away to buyers of the physical book. The gifts are usually available if purchased during a specified time. I would think this would work great also when including an affiliate progr

I strongly like the sound of your second option, foregoing initial sales.

Hi Graham,
My printer is BROKEN now - so I still havent been able to finish printing off the book. However, if it is as good as it looks from the alternative pages numbers that I do have - dont worry i shall be shouting from the roof tops for all my friends to come and read it.

That,s a great approach from San and she is right, need to give a little to get allot! As far as tracking, at least on the net, try incorporating a tracker into the ebook so you will know how many you have given away and/or sold. For the brick and mortar building a little easier but both can be illegally coppied beyaon your control. Just a fact of life, too mant scammers/spammers on the net these days. Just try to protect yourself the best you can,

Hi Graham,
You missed a third alternative.
Have people promote the book and give them 50% sales commission.
You make less but you have more people selling it for you.
If you need details on how you would set it up let me know.

Hi
this probably won't be much help because I'm not much of an expert at marketing. I just sort of stumble along - don't get me wrong, my stumbling is paying off.
However, with regard to your dilemma - I would think it depends on how much faith you have in your book. If you think people are gonna really want to follow up, then forego the initial sales of book one.
Can't you do it all ways? Sell it physically, sell it online, and/or offer to give first book free if they buy books 2 and 3. I kn
