The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has served a show-cause notice on IndiaGo Airlines, the country?s most successful low-cost carrier, for not having
operated enough flights on Category IIA routes last month.

As per Schedule VI of the Aircraft Rules, if an airline is found guilty of violating these requirements, it may have to pay a fine of up to Rs2 lakh, its officials may face imprisonment for up to six months or both.

According to sources, no Indian airline has violated Category IIA norms in more than a decade and IndiGo would have some serious explaining to do to extricate itself from this problem.

As per existing norms, every Indian airline is required to deploy at least 10 per cent of the capacity it deploys on prime routes to stations which fall under Category IIA.

These stations include Jammu & Kashmir, the North-East Region, Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands. Airlines are required to connect these stations with stations outside these regions to promote connectivity.

But in September this year, when Srinagar airport was closed for about a
fortnight and flights were being operated from the nearby Avantipur Airport, IndiGo fell short of the 10% criterion because it refused to operate flights from the alternate airport.

IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh told DNA: ?We had a shortfall of only 0.09% in September for the first time in our operations ever due to the closure of Srinagar airport for almost two
weeks. For this, the ministry had discussed a waiver of Category II A requirements.?

Ghosh said he has already discussed with the Civil Aviation Ministry and with DGCA about mounting additional flights to Category II A stations in October ?so its (the issue) is closed?.

Another low-cost carrier, SpiceJet, is already facing DGCA?s wrath on overcrowding of a flight where seven children, all older than two years, were listed as infants and allowed to be carried in passengers? laps.

This is a serious violation of the CAR and the airline is yet to file its reply to DGCA query.
