Comments on today's racing:-

The Sussex National has attracted a tasty field and PETITE MARGOT (Plumpton, 2.25) is fancied to come out on top.

Once rated as high as 135 over hurdles, the nine-year-old mare looks well handicapped for this very tough assignment.  She ran a fine race in the Scottish Borders National but failed to pick up, finishing second behind Rambling Minster who was more at home over the marathon trip.  Today's trip and going looks perfect and she has the speed rating for the conditions. 

THE HARDY BOY (Plumpton, 3.25) was very well backed to win this race last year and is primed to repeat the feat on Sunday.  The Overbury gelding loves it at the track and the ground will not be a problem. 

SMOOTHLY DOES IT (Southwell, 3.10) was in great form over hurdles a year ago and should lack nothing in fitness for this return to racing on the Flat at Southwell.  This race looks barely better than a seller and bold show is expected.

No gambler worth his salt could ever state that question marks don't always surround the outcome of a particular bet. SOBA JONES is now 11yrs old and he is having his first outing of the season which only a fool would argue isn't a BIG negative. However, on the other side of the coin we have the fact he is a course & distance winner on no less than SIX occasions and if he is on his 'A' game, he will make a mockery of his double figure price tag. I can't deny that I am shooting in the dark somewhat about his fitness but John Balding is in decent form and he can't really be affording to take his time with a horse who made his racecourse debut back in 1999. SOBA JONES won this race in 2006 and he finished 2nd in it last year, so I could think of plenty of worse horses to be backing at 16/1 on a moderate afternoon like today.
