When you apply for credit cards, you have to take the time to find the right one. Of course a low interest rate is of high importance, but this is not the only thing that you have to consider. You have to choose the right credit card company, find the cards that offer great terms, and depending on your personal credit score and rating, find the cards that are the best overall fit for you, and your current financial and credit position.

Your credit score -

When you apply for credit cards, your credit score, rating, and past credit history, are possibly the most important things a credit card company will look at. If you have a great credit score and payment history, you are going to be approved for everything; if you have a less than average or desirable score, you have to take your time to find the right fit. You must look for prepaid cards, entry level cards, and credit card companies that offer cards to anyone, if they are able to make the payments on time, and willing to pay the higher interest rates.

Interest rates -

The most important thing to you, as an individual that is making the monthly payments, is what interest rate you will pay on the card. When you apply for credit cards, you should look for companies that offer no interest for a set period of time (usually 6 months up to 18 months at most). This will allow you to spend, and make smaller payments each month, without having to worry about interest. Once this introductory phase ends, you do have to be careful, as these interest rates tend to skyrocket. On the other end of the spectrum, if you have a decent score, you can find decent rates; you have to compare cards and companies, to find the right fit.

Awards and rewards -

Many credit cards give you rewards. From frequent flyer miles, to cash back on your spending. Depending on what you use your card for most, and what rewards are most important to you, this is also something to keep in mind when you are ready to apply. Not all cards do, but today, you are going to find a majority of credit card companies offering some kind of rewards.

Membership or annual fees -

These are cards to avoid at all costs if possible, unless you are going through an employer for the credit card. Why should you pay a fee to own the card, especially if you do not use it on a regular basis. Ask questions, know what to look for, and find out what (if any) annual and other fees are involved, before you apply for a particular card.

These are some of the inquiries that you should have, as you are choosing which and when to apply for credit cards. With so many companies and cards, you are bound to find one that fits your needs, and is going to give you back the rewards you want.
