What is a niche
A lot of times I've heard "Sport niche", "Health Niche", "Shopping Niche", and so on. I consider that they are categories. Niche is all that is included in these categories. For example category "Sport" includes niche "baseball", "women's baseball", "College and University baseball", etc. (see the niche's scheme below)

Niches scheme in my understanding:

Niche scheme

This is only small piece of category "HOME", this category contains tons of niches. Often the "last niche" in category is most profitable, for example category  HEALTH -> Weight Loss -> Special Diets -> Low Fat -> Desserts

What kind of niche choose to monetize
Suggestions over the internet are a lot of, and all are more or less similar. I think, that most important is feelings - if you feel that your chosen niche could be profitable, not looking for anything else, but start to research it - keywords, competitors, etc.

What is generally recommended to choose a niche:

  1. most popular is is to choose a niche where you have a skills, professional experience or expertise;
  2. advice is to "do what you love", or choose a niche you are passionate about - a hobby or lifestyle choice;
  3. find a product and looking for the niche for it;
    these two (below) I like the most
  4. choose something what you would like to start doing, something to collect or get into, a new lifestyle or hobby;
  5. step outside of your frame of reference - "think outside the box"! Just imagine how would you like to live - your ideal life. How would you spend your time and money if you had an unlimited amount at your disposal? Write down everything that you can imagine and that comes to mind.

How to find niche technically (many gurus overlook this important paragraph)
I've researched almost all free possibilities. By searching list of niches you will find tos of websites who offers list of most popular niches, but hese lists are not objective, everyone writes about what he is closer, and most of them are copy/paste information.

I found three sites where it is possible to find a niche:
(Watch the video below how to use these sites)

Easy to use, large database... I just like it :)
In each category you can see and research the competitors websites.

Open Directory Project

The same like ODP... I do not know what exactly, but there's something lacking

Like in OPD, here also in each category you can research the competitors websites.

Yahoo Directory

List of all categories on one page, easy to use. "If there is demand, there is also a product" - so all the niches on this list should be profitable :)
