What are 'non-essential cookies'?

Non-essential cookies are basically those which aren't required for the website to function. For example, if cookies are needed for a customer to check out and buy products, that is considered an essential cookie. Examples of non-essential cookies include (but aren't limited to) those from analytics, advertising and affiliate networks such as Google Analytics, Google Adsense, and all affiliate programs. The vast majority of websites drop non-essential cookies.

How You Can Use This To Your Advantage:

This law has been all over the news here in the UK so business owners with websites know they need this but the majority of them have no clue on how to implement this fix. This is your opportunity to offer them the solution by updating their sites for them. I recommend targetting UK sites for this, though this is an EU law, most other EU countries won't speak your language so it will be harder to sell it to them. How To Implement:

You can charge what you want, I would recommend offering the service in UK pounds and not in dollars, this will help you to close more clients. £20-£30 each is a good starting point and this roughly equates to $30-$45 so you do the math, as you can see this can be very profitable. Another opportunity this affords you when you have completed the fix for them is that you get to work with a client who may need other services and now trusts you. You could sell them mobile sites, social media, SEO the list goes on and on. Finding the Clients:

You can search sites by yourself and check to see if they have dropped a cookie on your computer or you can do it the easy way and use the client finder software provided. This software will search the top 60 results for your query (see software guide) and return all the sites that are using cookies. The software usesgoogle.co.uk for results but if you are searching from outside the UK you may not get the results you were expecting. Try and add UK to the end of your area search query and this may return better results. Example “london uk” When the software has done it's run you can export to CSV or just go directly to the sites from within the software by clicking on the links, when you arrive at a site you need to check whether the site already has a cookie notice, you will see this at the top or bottom of the site. If the site doesn't have a cookie notice then you should go to the contact page to see if you can get an email address or use their contact form. Getting the clients is easy you don't have to do any cold calling (though you can if you want to). When you have a list of about 20 email addresses then you should send an email to them (like the one provided) or use their contact form to send your message. You will need FTP or login details for their sites so you can complete the process of adding the cookie warning script to the sites.

I would start by going for small businesses, big business will have their own dedicated IT staff and probably already have this covered but most small businesses don't know where to start. Start by finding small service sites such as builders, plumbers, roofers etc. These are the types of businesses that will need a hand in getting this issue sorted. If you are UK based then you can take this local to start with, check their sites first to make sure they aren't compliant then just call in at the businesses and let them know their sites could get them fined if they don't get it fixed and then present them with your offer. Another way to use this is for lead generation, if you are into higher paying services such as SEO, mobile sites and social media then you could offer to do this simple service for free, once you have completed it for them then you offer your higher priced services and the chances are that they will hire you over some random that hasn't done anything for them.
