Search Engine Optimization is
one of the most dissected topics on the web as of today. It is also quite
misunderstood in certain respects and a quite controversial topic of
discussion.
What is SEO?
SEO or Search Engine Optimization
is the process of changing some of the vital aspects of a web site with a view
that it does well on the listings of all major search engines.
Why is SEO such a hot topic
of discussion?
SEO is a topic which causes
major debates within the small SEO community and especially the website owners.
After working for over five years in this industry and having tasted some
success, here are my opinions as to why SEO causes such a stir:
1. Traffic ? Traffic is money
here in cyberspace and SEO companies and consultants mainly make their money
from website owners by helping the latter to get a continuous flow of traffic
from the Internet. Specifically targeted traffic is another bonus that is
provided by SEO consultants to the website owners who choose to hire the
former.
2. Controversy ? Search
Engine Optimization is certainly one of the most controversial topics on the
Internet today. SEO consultants will say that it provides for a viable method
to increase the visibility of the website on the search engines. However, there
are those who will claim that all this is a hoax and their websites are doing
perfectly well and earning loads of money online even without the use of SEO
techniques.
All this controversy between
the ardent supporters of SEO and the people who claim that SEO is a plain hoax
generates a lot of attention. As long as the search engines continue to play a
major role in the generation of targeted website traffic, SEO will remain a hot
topic.
3. Money Involved ? SEO is a
billion dollar business. Search engines like Google make billions of dollars
annually just through advertising. Website owners earn billions among them by
using search engines through listings in search results or paid advertisements
on their respective sites.
Anything that can produce so
much of revenue is bound to attract a lot of eyeballs and that is just the case
with SEO.
4. Search Engines ? SEO is a
direct consequence of the development, utilization and ultimately the
popularity that was generated by search engines like Google. The SEO industry
survives on these search engines. Without them, there would not have been SEO.
SEO= Search Engine
Optimization. It is the optimization of a website for it to return good
results/rankings on all major search engines with Google being the benchmark as
it is the most popular. If there were no search engine, there is no need for
anybody to optimize their websites for these search engines. Quite simple.
5. Secrecy ? Not a single SEO
consultant will explain to you how they do what they do for your website so
that the website helps you earn some online income. There is a certain mystery
about the entire issue. Consultants do not come clean about the methods that
they employ for SEO. Their point of view is quite simple ? they are being paid
for their skill. If their secret is out in the open, they will lose their
living!
