Generally speaking, pipe and tube would be similar at first sight. Whether you need ERW steel pipe or other types, you need to figure out the difference between them before your purchase. Today, we'd like to share the difference on pipe and tube's diameter. Different co-reference for diameter: Pipe's diameter means the nominal diameter and it's not actual. The actual physical outside diameter is larger than the nominal OD. Tube's diameter refers to the actual outside diameter. So its actual physical OD is same with the nominal one. Different accommodate application with size: Pipe's accommodate large application with sized that range from a half-inch to several feet. Tube's size is generally used in applications that require smaller diameters.

In short: Tube is measured by outside diameter, pipe is measured by inside diameter. There is often confusion as to which size die the customer actually needs - Pipe Size or Tubing Size. Keep in mind that pipe size refers to a nominal - not actual - inside pipe diameter. Schedule refers to the pipe's wall thickness.
