Upon entering the "Write an abstract" option, details are requested including an email address (for transfer of payment via PayPal). The surfer selects a book or an article, writes the abstract (according to the site's guidelines) and submits it. The money is transferred into the abstract-writer's account at the end of each month. The amount paid will be according to the "number of entries to abstract page" parameter.The source of Shvoong's profits is advertising. The site managers distribute 10% of the profits to the abstract-writers on whose abstract pages advertisement links were clicked on by random surfers. In addition, anyone translating an abstract to another language will receive 5%, according to the same principle.
As explained in the previous answer, advertisements appear in the margins of every page. The advertisers pay varying sums, ranging from several cents to several dollars, for each entry to the advertisement link by random surfers. At the end of each month, the computer totals the income and transfers the money.
