Review on Mumbai Coastal Road Project

On Saturday, March 19, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC ) stated that it is working on a war footing to complete the mumbai Coastal Road project by November 2023, reports mentioned. The completed project will add a promenade to Mumbai, between Priyadarshani Park and Bandra Worli Sea Links Worli side.

According to accounts, the said promenade will be equipped with a bicycle track, an open-air theatre as well as an underground car park. Apart from this, the civic body is looking to plant native trees along the promenade and make requisite seating arrangements too.

Based on narratives, the civic authority has completed more than 50 per cent of the Mumbai Coastal Road work that includes reclamation and tunnelling. It has been reported that the reclamation work has been undertaken at many sites that include Girgaum Chowpatty, Nepean Sea Roads Priyadarshani Park, Breach Candys Bhulabhai Desai Road, Haji Ali as well as Worli sea face.

Moreover, in the BMC budget 2022-23, the civic authority had allocated INR 3,200 core for the Mumbai Coastal Road Project. On the other hand, certain reports claim that the civic chief, Iqbal Singh Chahal had remarked that they are looking to complete 90 per cent of the project by the end of the 2022-23 financial year.

In other developments, the Coastal Road Project was deemed maladaptive by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changes (IPCC) latest report. The report says that the project will cause damage to inter-tidal fauna and flora as well as local fishing livelihoods.
