Marko was born in Russia but raised in Cairo where he was abandoned by his mother and spent his youth as a street criminal. He was captured by Professor Charles Xavier and Dr. Moira MacTaggert, who were on an expedition to find new mutants, but he escaped from them after they were attacked by Krakoa the Living Island. Marko eventually returned to Russia where he became an agent of the KGB, using his mutant powers to commit various crimes for them until he was recruited into Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
