Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic (long standing) autoimmune disease which mainly affects our joints but can cause other problems in the body also like fever, lung problems, nerve problems etc.

The immune system of the body normally protects us from outside infections and also helps in healing of injuries. Whenever there is an infection or injury, the immune system gets activated and causes inflammation (similar to a FIRE) to fight off the foreign infection. Once the infection resolves, the inflammation is brought under control by the body through various mechanisms. Thus THE FIRE IS DOUSED.

However, in autoimmune diseases, the control mechanism of the immune system fails and the inflammation continues despite resolution of the infection. The FIRE continues to WREAK HAVOC! The persistent inflammation causes various problems like pain and swelling of joints, fever, swelling of kidneys, etc. If this FIRE is allowed to persist for a long time, it causes permanent joint damage needing joint replacement surgeries.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can affect any Age or Gender. However, it most commonly affects females in the age group of 30-50 years.

The primary symptoms of Rheumatoid arthritis are joint pain, swelling, morning stiffness and occasionally redness. The joints are warm to touch. The pain is worst in the morning and improves as the day progresses. The predominant joints involved are the hand joints. Typically, ladies have difficulty in making fist, kneading the dough, milk the cows, open bottle caps and taps, do knitting or dairy household chores. Besides hands, the knee and ankle joints may also be involved causing pain and difficulty in walking, squatting, etc. Patients may need daily pain killers or over the counter drugs for pain relief. Sometimes there can be fever associated with joint pains.
