Trowel is one of the most important tiling tools. You cannot apply even a single tile on your wall or floor without trowel.

There are different trowels meant for different purposes. When you are gearing up for your tile project, you cannot pick just any trowel. You should choose the right trowel keeping in mind a few factors, for example: the tile size and mortar coverage.

Trowels can be differentiated with the style of their notches. Such as –

V-Shaped Trowel –

Also known as V-Notch Trowel, this trowel has a zig-zag or sawtooth like pattern. It makes the right choice for installing meshed mosaic tiles.

If you are installing smaller tiles such as classic subway tiles and square subway mosaic tiles, then also you should pick V-Notch Trowel.

U-Shaped Trowel –

This trowel features U-like (UUUUUU) patterns. When you have a large area to cover or working with 1 sq.ft. tiles, then you will need to spread more mortar on the subfloor or tile back. For this, U-Notch Trowel would be a better choice.

This trowel eases your job and helps save your time a great deal.

Square-Notch Trowel –

With their square notches, these trowels are able to spread more mortar on the surface. The mortar rows you create using square-notch trowel have flat space between them.

Trowels with square or rectangular notches are ideally used for installing floor tiles.

So, as per the rule: mosaic or small tiles will require v-notch trowel, average size tiles will need u-notch trowel, and floor and large-size tiles will be placed using square-notch trowel.

And pick the size of trowel as per your convenience.
