Windows Installation Is Costly But Saves Money, Lots Of It

Indeed, replacing old, worn windows with a brand spanking new windows installation can pay for itself rather quickly. Not by a significant increase in the market value of your home, as so many installers of new windows want you to believe, but rather by what you can save on energy for cooling in summer and heating in winter.

Installing new windows adds some value to your home at the time of a sale, but the added value is usually on the moderate level when compared to other methods of upgrading and/or remodelling a house. It goes together with a kitchen remodel, remodelling a deck, minor bathroom remodel and so on. These improvements tend to return the investment, sometimes a little more.

Replace a window when:

  • your energy bill increases considerably,
  • you feel cold drafts in the house during the cold season,
  • your double-pane window glass feels cold to the touch,
  • windows are difficult to open or close,
  • the paint on your window cracks, peels or falls of,
  • the window frame is rotting away.

When do you need a new construction window?

Use new construction windows installation when the frame of the old window is completely rotted out and has become structurally unstable. In other words, new construction windows are required when the old frame for the window(s) is unusable.

You also need new construction windows when a new room or another addition is added to the house.

When to replace a window?

Windows often can be repaired instead of replacing them outright. Over time, the insulation around windows deteriorates and often breaks down. That lets cold air sneak in and warm inside air escape to the cold outside. A homeowner will first notice this breakdown when his heating bill suddenly increases considerably. Skilled homeowners may be able to replace bad window insulation. However, it is safer, and better in the long run, to hire a professional for the work.

Are window replacements expensive?

Yes, they are. Quite often replacements are far more expensive than even an informed homeowner expects. How much the replacement will cost depends on the window material, the style and size of the window, the glazing and, last but not least, on the company that installs the window.

Expect to spend at least around $10,000 to replace all windows in a normal family home. Fancy modern homes and mansions cost much more.

Handyman or professional windows Installation Company?

True, some bad windows can be repaired by the homeowner or a handyman. It saves money in the short run. However, if the repair is not expertly done, you will have to face the same dilemma all over again in no time.

Professional window installers are the better, though initially more expensive, choice. Search locally for individual installers or window installation companies. Window manufacturers also install windows, themselves or through contract installers. They are a good choice all around.
