Will My U.S. Auto Insurance Cover My Car in Mexico?

by West Coast Global Insurance West Coast Global Insurance

A road trip has a certain appeal that is uniquely American. But what if you have already taken the family to Glacier National Park, cruised down the Outer Banks, and explored the rest of the country’s iconic sights over and over? Why not visit America’s neighbor to the south, Mexico, and see what it has to offer? Mexico is abundant with breathtaking vistas and vibrant cultures, all of which are easily accessible by your car.

An international road trip takes a bit more planning than driving down the Pacific Coast Highway. However, if you plan ahead of time, you should have a wonderful road trip experience.

Is your U.S. auto insurance valid in Mexico?

Many Americans are surprised to find out that their car insurance does not cover them once they are south of the border. It is worth mentioning that some U.S.-based insurance companies may offer a limited extension of vehicle theft and damage coverage up to a certain distance — usually only 25 to 50 miles from the Mexico and U.S. Border.

Drivers involved in a car accident in Mexico are legally required to provide proof of financial responsibility upon request. You might be sentenced to many unpleasant hours in a Mexican jail (with your vehicle impounded) or face a hefty fine if you fail to demonstrate your financial responsibility.

Mexican liability insurance can prove your financial responsibility and save you from facing the misfortune of jail time or penalties. However, it must be issued by a Mexican insurance company. Insurance companies licensed in the U.S. are not permitted to sell Mexican liability insurance. Even if you do have enough money in the bank to provide proof of financial responsibility, you could lose a lot of it if you get into an auto accident while uninsured.

It is generally recommended that you get at least $300,000 in liability coverage before heading out on your road trip in Mexico to cover the costs of any major repairs and/or medical expenses incurred by the injured parties. Keep in mind that you will also need to buy third-party liability auto insurance for Mexico if you rent a car — this may or may not be included in your rental charge. In addition to liability coverage, an ideal Mexican insurance policy should also cover theft and vandalism, medical payments for you and your passengers, legal representation and court costs, and roadside assistance.

As mentioned before, some U.S.-based insurance companies offer limited coverage against damage to your vehicle if you are only driving a few miles across the border. However, since this coverage does not meet the legal requirements for liability insurance under Mexican law, you will need to buy Mexican Auto liability coverage in any case.

It is a big risk to drive into Mexico without proper auto insurance. Fortunately, these policies are reasonably priced and can be purchased online. As with any other type of Mexico insurance, make sure to compare prices to get the best deal possible on your online Mexican insurance.
