Why Won’t My Car Start?

by Roselands Auto Lakemba Mechanic

Have you ever had one of those days when you’re running late, and your car won’t start? Apart from being incredibly frustrating and stressful, especially if you have an important meeting or appointment to get to, it indicates that perhaps your car isn’t running as well as it could be.

There are a number of reasons why your car is having problems starting, most of which would usually be picked up at your regular car service. A Bexley mechanic explains what could be going wrong.

The Most Common Reasons

The most common reasons for cars not starting are a flat battery, problems with the ignition, clogged fuel filters and issues with the starter motor.

However, it could be a less obvious problem such as issues with the timing belt or the ignition coil. While most issues can be resolved relatively quickly and cheaply, others may be a more expensive fix.

There’s an Issue with the Battery

Ask any centre that specialises in car repair and car service in Kingsgrove and the surrounding areas for the number one reason for cars not starting, and they’ll tell you that it’s all down to an issue with the battery.

So if your engine turns over but the car won’t start it’s likely to be your battery. If it happens on a regular basis or the engine just won’t turn over at all, then you’re going to need to replace the battery. As a quick fix, you can use jump leads to get the power you need.

There’s an Issue with the Starter Motor

As its name suggests, the starter motor turns the engine over. Therefore, if you start the car and the engine doesn’t fire, you’ve possibly got an issue with the starter motor.

There’s an Issue with the Ignition

If you have a problem with the ignition, your car may start and then stop again suddenly. If you are experiencing this problem, we would recommend that you have your vehicle checked out by a mechanic.

There’s an Issue with the Fuel Filters

As you can imagine, if the fuel filters become clogged up with sediment, the fuel won’t be able to reach the engine, and your car won’t be able to start. This problem can be easily avoided by ensuring that you book in for a regular car service in Earlwood.

Fuel filters are usually replaced every 24,000 miles or every 2 years, so if you think that your filter is in need of replacement, book an appointment now.
