Why the Biggest "Myths" About Tyre Maintenance May Be Right

by One Stop Tyre Centre Welcome to One Stop Tyre Centre

It's a fact that tyre maintenance can make you better. However, as with any incremental gain to the body, it is also hard work. There are many "solutions" on the market to make your life easier leaving time for more important things.

For example, racing cyclists have long used anti-friction potions in their tyres or round tube wet lubes sprayed on sidewalls to save their hands doing all that wiping of bead lubricant onto the rim before inflation.

The problem is that most of these products are snake oil and will not help unless combined with proper maintenance techniques for that specific product type/design. We came across just such an instance recently when working on some new tubeless designs that were being fried using a popular "magic" sealant.

Many people believe myths about tyre maintenance because it's hard to see what's happening down there, between the tread and the road. The following are some of the most common myths about tyre maintenance - and why they may be right.

Myth 1: Wiping your tyres with a cloth will clean them and make them last longer

This is partly true - if you are using the correct cleaning agent. However, simply wiping your tyres with a cloth will not remove all the dirt and grime, which can cause wear and tear on your tyres. To clean your Goodyear Tyres Tamworth properly, you need to use a cleaning agent to remove all the dirt and grime. Tyre manufacturers produce special tyre cleaning products meant for this purpose, but you can also try WD-40 if you don't have any dedicated tyre cleaners.

Myth 2: You need to inflate your tyres to the MAX pressure printed on the sidewall

This is not true - with tubeless tyres, lower pressure will allow the sealant to do its job better and create a proper seal. That said, it's advisable that even with tubeless systems, you should still use at least 80% of the maximum pressure indicated just in case you get a flat tyre with no sealant left in it! If you're using tube-type tyres, always check the manufacturer's recommendations where they want their tyre pressures set.

Myth 3: Running tyres at low pressures will reduce the chance of pinch flats

Many cyclists believe this, but it's not true - the fact that your Goodyear Tyres Tamworth pressure is lower does not impact whether you are more or less likely to get a "pinch flat". If you do, it's usually due to the rim bottom being too hard for the tyre gauge to detect, regardless of inflation pressure. Many riders also use sealant in their tubes which can make them even more prone to getting pinch flats. If there is any sealant present in your tyre after a puncture, this should be removed before mounting another tube inside. Otherwise, it will seep through the cotton layer creating another flat spot!

Myth 4: All you need to do is add sealant, and your tyres will never go flat again

This is not true - sealant can help fix small punctures. But it cannot fix a tyre that has been completely blown out. If you get a tyre with a big hole in it, the sealant will not fix it, and you will need to replace the tyre.

Myth 5: I don't need to worry about my tyres until they are bald

While this may be true for some types of Cheap Tyres Tamworth, it is not true for others. For example, if you are using high-performance tyres, it is important to keep an eye on their tread depth. You should also check your tyres regularly for cuts, gashes, and other damage that could lead to a blowout.

It's important to know the truth about tyre maintenance to keep your tyres in good condition and running smoothly. By following the tips in this article, you can help to extend the life of your tyres.
