Why Should You Use Lithium Batteries In Your Off-Road Pop Top Camper?

by Liza Dcruz SEO Analysis Expert

Why would you pay more for lithium when AGM batteries are less expensive? That is a valid query. This is why. Using lithium batteries in a caravan is a great idea. Any deep-cycle 12V battery, such as the house battery for an Off-Road Pop Top Camper, fifth wheel or travel trailer, should be able to be replaced with a 12V lithium battery. More and more Off Road Pop Top Campers owners are switching to lithium-ion house batteries in place of their older lead-acid batteries.

Initial Expense

Yes, a lithium battery costs more than twice as much as an AGM battery for the same amount of energy. Even though this is a considerable expenditure, whether a lithium battery is more cost-effective for you than an AGM depends on your intended use. If your battery is only used sometimes each year, AGM batteries are a better option.

On the other hand, lithium batteries may be the greatest choice for somebody who frequently goes camping and discharges their batteries.

An AGM battery will most likely endure 600 cycles when being discharged at a rate of about 50% of its rated capacity. Lithium batteries survive about 5000 cycles with the same kind of usage. Lithium is more affordable in this situation.

Ratios of Weight, Size, and Energy

AGM batteries are heavy, aren't they, everything you add to your Off-Road Pop Top Camper will reduce the weight you can haul with you. If you've ever changed one, you'll understand what I mean. A standard AGM battery with 110 amp hours might weigh up to 35 kg or more. The Baintech Lithium Batteries Platinum campers advise weighing only 13kg in contrast. This might result in a weight reduction of more than 44 kg when discussing a dual battery system! Which entails a large amount of food and clothing, or even an extra jerry can of water or fuel! That might significantly alter your experience in the outback!

AGM batteries should never be discharged below 50% since doing so might cause damage, lower the number of cycles you can get out of the battery, and ultimately shorten its lifespan—sometimes significantly. (Everyone has encountered a dead battery that won't charge no matter what they do.) The actual usable energy from a 110 amp-hour battery will be closer to 55 amp-hours even at a 50% discharge.

This can be compared to lithium batteries. Lithium batteries can safely be discharged to as little as 10% without harming the battery's condition. Consequently, a 110 amp-hour lithium battery has more than 40 amp hours than an AGM battery.

Charging

Simply put, when you're camping, the quicker the better. You need to be able to quickly recharge it because batteries lose power over time when used frequently.  Lithium batteries are excellent at this; they can tolerate significantly greater charge levels up to 100%. When AGM batteries are 80% loaded, they immediately begin to slow down. This indicates that you need more solar panel time and/or more generator time.

Additionally, keep in mind that times have changed. Earlier the only batteries we had while camping were a few for flashlights and walkie-talkies and one to start the car. Cooking was done with gas or over a fire, and things were kept chilled in the sky.

Things are a little different now; fridges and freezers are common, kids want to keep their phones charged to take pictures (not play games, of course), you might have packed a TV to watch some Netflix at night, and while music used to be played on the guitar, it's probably being played on Spotify these days! To keep everyone charged these days, you, therefore, need a sizable battery.

Do you require a lithium battery upgrade and what are the main reasons for doing so?

Whatever you need to charge will depend on how frequently you need to recharge it as well as how long you will be away from a power source. While there are many reasons to invest in lithium, these are the key factors to think about:

1. Up to one-third less weight— 13 kg versus 35 kg

2. More power - Unlike lead acid batteries, which experience a rapid voltage drop, lithium batteries maintain their voltage throughout the cycle.

3. Greater capacity - Lead acid batteries only have a 50% - 1.8X storage capacity and can only be discharged up to 90%.

4. Longer lifespan: Get a lithium battery to last over ten years with just 2000–5000 cycles.

5. Faster to charge – Lithium batteries can accept a strong charge more effectively, making charging times faster.

6. Cost-effective throughout the battery's life -  you might go through three or four lead-acid batteries at the same time as one lithium battery.

The most recent and greatest in battery technology are lithium batteries for caravans. They outperform AGM batteries for the travelling set in many impressive ways.  New off-road caravans are increasingly using lithium batteries. Lithium batteries are the best to power the off-road pop top campers having numerous appliances and are to be taken for extended trips away from the main power source. That is how the campers perform better.
