For a fruitful health of your vigorous and hearty pet, regular exercising is one of the most prominent steps, commonly found in the pet grooming tips. It is this service of yours towards your pet, which could always offer it resistance from disorders and even other astonishing body conditions such as obesity or hypertension.

One of the most common forms of exercises is strolling with your pet, most probably in a leisurely manner, so as to rejuvenate even your senses and body in the cool hours of morning. And for your pet accompanying you to a public place, it is better to keep it leashed, holding it tight in your hand.

Even the bylaws of some countries have made it mandatory for the pet keepers to keep their pet leashed securely when in a public place. Due to this, there are many distinct kinds of dog leashes available commercially that you could make use of.

One of the similar, commonly used leashes is a retractable dog leash, which is different from the other ones due to the length of the strap it could have. A retractable leash could have a length of about 26 feet, which is winded around a handle, adjustable in nature.

However, this kind of leash has proved to be a menace for the pets, the pet keepers, the other people in close vicinity, the public property and even for the other pets that roam in the area. The retractable leash could have the following disadvantages of account of the following factors:

·         The length to which the leash could extend is always a perilous factor, more so, if your pet is a notorious one. Though the length could be fixed to a particular point, constant pulling of the leash by your dog could always tend to extend the length more than the required. With the extended length, the dog walking on the corner of the road could always go astray, inviting chances of accidents, fight with other pets and causing harm to other people.

·         Retractable leashes are most commonly made up of thin cord which could break at any point if you have a big-sized or powerful dog at one of its ends. While the dog continually attempts to pull itself from the leash, the leash could break with a jerk, offering freedom to the dog and could even offer a nasty blow to the human at the other end.

·         With the continuous attempts to pull these leashes, dogs could receive many physical neck injuries. These leashes could be responsible for neck rashes, wounds, chocking, smothering and could even cause other critical conditions such as spine injuries and lacerated tracheas etc.

·         Retractable leashes could offer enough length to your dog to indulge in a fight with the other dog in close vicinity, even when your pet is held securely in your hands.

·         The handle of the Retractable dog leashes could be considerably heavy, making it difficult for the pet keeper to grip properly with no prior experience. The dogs could take advantage of this and pull their body off. If the handle is not held securely, it could prove harmful in a variety of ways.

·         With a bit of mechanism involved in winding and unwinding these leashes, they could tend to malfunction at some instances, making it difficult for you to handle. If these refuse to function at some instance, you could expect yourself and your dog to be in a difficult situation.

Due to all these factors, retractable leashes are less commonly used by the pet owners, who prefer various other kinds of dog leashes for their everyday use.
