Why Parents Should Not Allow their Kids to Brush on their Own – A Discourse

by Dennis Block

Child tooth decay is one problem that is not uncommon. More and more kids are facing this issue in recent times. Poor oral hygiene is one of the major causes for tooth decay. This happens for a number of reasons. The reputed dentists have reported that more often than not, they come across parents who say that their kids are well aware about how to brush and stuff like that. There are also incidents where the dentists have reported to meet parents who claim that they want their kids to be independent so they allow them to brush without any supervision. And as a result of that, the kids end up with cavities.

Here are some questions and answers regarding why kids should not be allowed to brush on their own.

  1. Question: How many children suffer through this problem? How common is it?

Answer: There are lots of cases that the dentists face for this problem. Tooth decay is preventable. But even in that case, the World Health Organisation has reported that about 70-90% of kids from around the globe suffer from such a problem.

  1. Question: What is recommended to the parents when it comes to their child’s oral health?

Answer: It is true that every kid is different from the other but in general it is always recommended that parents should brush their kid’s teeth when they are 5-8 years old. The parents should also continue to supervise their kid’s brushing from the age of 10 to 12. This makes sure that they are doing it thoroughly. You should go for brushing at least twice a day for two minutes.

  1. Question: What to do if the child keeps insisting to brush on his own?

Answer: You should always keep it mind that like other forms of art, brushing, too is a skill. One has to hone this skill over the years for achieving perfection. Young kids do not possess the manual dexterity to floss or brush properly. If your child wants to do it then you should let him or her do it. It is always great to practise and be self-reliant. But you should also make sure that you brush their teeth before or after they have done it. For the children who are a bit older you should supervise them. You should be by their side when they are brushing and assess whether they are doing it properly. Correct them whenever you find that they are not doing it correctly.

  1. Question: What other things one should practise for oral hygiene?

Answer: Apart from regular visits to the dentist’s office and regular dental check-up another thing that the parents should check on is the diet of the children. Kid’s diets are suggested with minimum sugar intake. This way you can protect your kid’s teeth from cavities. If you want to give some sweets to your children then go for a small serving after food or restrict it to one day in a week when they can have sweets.

The above are some of the things the most proficient and Top dentist in Bushwick has suggested for maintaining the oral hygiene of your kids.
