A study by the Governors Highway Safety Association recently
revealed that motorcycle deaths in the United States have risen more than 10
percent in the last year.
The study attributes this spike in motorcycle deaths to a
number of factors including improved weather and lower gas prices. Scenic areas
of the country, such as Utah, see seasonal spikes in motorcycle activity during
the warmer months. Accidents involving motorcycles are especially dangerous,
complicated and often require a motorcycle accident lawyer.
While there are many factors that have contributed to the
increase in motorcycle deaths, researches from Sam Schwartz Consulting beleive
that one change could drastically cut deaths as a result of motorcycle
accidents. The firm observed that 32 out of 50 states currently lack mandatory
helmet laws for all riders.
Research from the Utah Foundation supports the idea,
recommending that mandatory helmet laws for all riders, including passengers
would likely reduce fatalities.
Motorcyclists are far more likely than passengers in a car
to be injured or killed in an accident and should take extra care when riding
in areas like Utah, where geography adds risk when operating a motorcycle.
Motorcyclists and passengers should always wear helmets and practice safe
techniques while riding.
If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident, contact a
lawyer immediately. Finding the right lawyer can relieve much of the stress
that comes from dealing with insurance companies and hospitals while
recovering.
Before the spike in motorcycle deaths last year, the number
had been on a steady decline since 2008. Some accidents cannot be avoided but
the hassle of dealing with a lawyer and insurance companies when injured in an
accident is far better than those that come with loved ones dying as a result
of a motorcycle accident. States should consider improving motorcycle safety
laws and riders should always take the necessary precautions to avoid injury or
death.
