Why it is a good idea to own a personal alarm

by Ute Machnik Fun and Games

Even though we like to believe that we live in a peaceful world and the society around us has evolved sufficiently in order for one not to worry about personal safety on the streets, there are moments when things are not quite so. In the following rows, we’re discussing the importance of owning a personal alarm for safety purposes.

What is a personal alarm?

It’s a small device that is usually held along with keys, on a keychain, that can give you protection in the unlikely case you’re being attacked on the street. This small device is very loud, being capable of delivering over 120 decibels, and it will surprise and confuse the attacker, allowing the victim a few seconds to get out of a tricky situation.

How does it work?

The vast majority of personal alarms are activated by pulling a strap, cord or chain that is attached to a pin. This method is extremely popular for a keychain alarm, for example. Once the pin is out the alarm will start to ring until it is inserted back in. Most personal alarms will continue ringing for more than 20 minutes unless the pin is put back in and this is excellent in case you’re in a secluded area.

Some features you should look for

There are a lot of different types of personal alarms out there, however, there are some key features that you need to be aware of before choosing one for you. And the most important are:

  • It needs to be readily available

  • Size and weight needs to be adjusted for you

  • Battery autonomy

  • Loudness

There you go, these are just some reasons why owning a personal alarm is a very good idea. And now you also know what to look for when it comes to buying one. Stay safe!
