Why is it Important to Regularly Check Your Car's Tyres?

by Roselands Auto Lakemba Mechanic

Your tyres are an essential part of your car. Without them, you would not be able to use your car, so it makes sense to ensure that you do everything you can to keep them in the best possible condition. At Roselands Automotive Centre, our Belmore mechanic can help you when it is time to change your tyres, and we can ensure that you get the right ones for your car.

In the meantime, there is plenty that you can do to give your tyres a longer lifespan.

Check your tyre pressure

Checking your tyre pressure is a quick and simple task that you should carry out about once a month. Your car may also be fitted with a tyre pressure sensor, and it will warn you if your tyre pressure needs attention.

You can purchase a tyre pressure gauge from an automotive shop or use your local garage. You can find out what your tyre pressure should be by looking at the sticker on the inside of the driver’s door or by checking your user manual.

When your tyre pressure is at the wrong level, it not only causes your tyres to wear unevenly, but it can also be dangerous. It can affect your steering, braking and how well your car deals with corners.

Check your tyre tread

Whatever the season, you need to have the legal requirement of tread left on your tyres. With a good amount of tread, your car can deal with water on the road better, as well as any other slippery conditions. It also means that your car will respond better to braking.

In Australia, your tread needs to be at least 1.5 mm. Your tyres will have tread wear indicators that tell you when your tyre’s tread is getting too low. Look out for the tread indicator; if your tyre tread is flush with it, it means it is time to get your tyre or tyres changed.

Check for any visual damage

Along with checking your tyre pressure and tread, when completing your checks, you should also watch out for any signs of visual damage. This could include any rips or bulges, as this could show that there is more damage within the tyre. You should also look out for divots in your tyres, as this could indicate that there is a problem.

Performing these checks regularly means that your car will be safe to drive, helping to keep you, your family and other road users as safe as possible. To get the most from your car, make sure you bring it to your friendly Lakemba mechanic at Roselands Automotive Centre for tyre changing, servicing and more.
