Why Girl ratio in IITs is Poor?

by John Smith Marketing Manager

IIT's, the most coveted institutes of technology of India, can actually be seen as the patriarchal seats of the Indian society. Why do I say so? Well, let's look at the basic structure of any IIT classroom. Where are the girls? The girl ratio in the IIT's is at its lowest dip. With only 10-14% intake of the girls in the IIT's , the issue of the abysmal gender ratio in the IIT's surely arises eyebrows.

In 2018, it was promulgated by the IIT's that 550 supernumerary seats will be created especially for the girls in order to strike a gender balance within these premier engineering institutes.

Despite faring better in the higher secondary exams, it is with utmost astonishment that one sees a dip in the admissions of girls in the IIT's. Previously it was quoted that girls do not have the analytical abilities to fare well in the IIT's (which is completely wrong). But the actual reason lies deep within the mindset of the Indian parents.

The Indian society still favours the education of boys rather than girls. The boys are sent to the IIT JEE coaching in Delhi and Kota, in order to enable them to fare well in the JEE. Also since the coaching is an expensive affair, the apparent future bread winners of the family are given preference than girls, who are supposed to eventually get married and go. This core reason, has its roots in the patriarchal mindset of the Indian Society.

Also, the smaller number of girls who actually qualify JEE, do not take admission in the IIT's. For example in 2016, out of the 2200 female candidates who qualified JEE, only 848 joined the IIT.

When enquired, it was found that the choices which the girls filled, were biased towards a certain courses and especially a particular geographical region. This was a clear showcase of the parental restrictions of the parents on the girls, to prefer the locations which are nearer to home.

With the media and the film industry of India projecting only men as engineers, and stereotyping certain fields of engineering such a mechanical engineering, software engineering to be men's field, it has become very tough for the female candidates to even enter these fields, let alone compete with the men.

One of the prime examples can be stated in terms of assignment solving. When an assignment is given in any of the IIT's it becomes very difficult for the girls to compete with boys, who form large groups to solve the questions and clarify their doubts. The girls are generally boycotted in such groups. The whole study atmosphere in the IIT's is very intimidating for the girls, and even more for those who are from small towns. They have to deal with the regular doses of male chauvinism from their fellow male classmates. This leads to a poor overall development of the students, both male and female.

Hence it is high time that these institutions take the fear out of the parents and the girl students and encourage them to take admissions in these prestigious institutions and make their mark.

CLEAREXAM is an IIT JEE coaching in East Delhi , where the equality between the girls and the boys is resonated even in their motto. Their motive is to provide the best set of skills set to all the students irrespective of their gender. Based near the Nirman Vihar metro station of Delhi, this coaching institute provides one of the most reliable IIT JEE coaching in Delhi .
