Why Engineering Graduates Need Australian Professional Year?

by Arpita Shah Seo Executive

Australia is counted among the preferred education destination for overseas students. A majority of students study engineering in Australia. And with the demand for professional engineers expectantly high every year, more and more international students dream of working and staying in Australia. This is an added impetus to the skilled migration initiative which encourages overseas students to study and subsequently get employed and settle in Australia.

Australia provides a number of world-class engineering courses in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and in all other major cities in the country.

And as mentioned earlier, after the completion of their engineering courses, students have a lot of opportunities to get employed by some of the top recruiters in the country.

And to facilitate this transition from the student phase to the candidate and a probable engineering professional, the Australian government has introduced post-study visas for its overseas students. The most prominently used post study visa is the Temporary Graduate Visa. This visa allows a student to stay, or enrol in another course and work after finishing his studies (for 18 months to 4 years) in Australia.

But, getting a job today in any market, in any setting, in any country is not easy. That’s the level of competition today. And in many cases, there is a significant gap between the theoretical concepts taught in universities and the skills demanded in the industry. So, the only way that you’re going to edge that competition is if you somehow bridge that gap.

Don’t worry. There’s a viable solution for that. There are many independent firms and institutes which provide a Professional Year in Engineering which is explicitly aimed at this purpose. It is an extensive 44-week curriculum (32 weeks formal learning and 12 weeks of internship), the programme trains the graduates according to the hardcore industry requirements and works on providing practical skills based on their courses of study. The programme even helps students in getting migration points.

Skilled migration, professional year programmes and other job and visa requirements might be too confusing to overseas students studying in Australia. Getting the right help at the right time is essential. Many education consultancies are operating in Australia which advice international students to outline their career pathways.
