Why Does My House Have Wet Walls?

by Lisa Matthew Roofing Contractors Tennessee
Let’s come to the fact first. You should not have wet walls. Yes, the condensation in the bathroom is a normal phase when you are done with a hot shower, there are droplets around you, but those droplets are gone once you are done with the hairdryer. Moreover, those droplets do not leave a mark on the walls or tiles. But you should make sure of it. There should also be no damp patches on any walls after the rain.

However, if the walls of your home are consistently wet, sweating, damp, or slick, this means you have a serious moisture problem. Some of few common signs of too much moisture on the wall are:
  • Peeling paint
  • Watermarks
  • Wet spots on the ceiling
  • Water running down inside the walls
  • Walls that feel damp to the touch
  • Visible mold
  • A musty, stale odor

What causes wet walls?

The science of this effect is simple. There would be only two reasons; either the moisture is not leaving your home or the moisture is coming inside your home. Condensation, leaks and inadequate drainage are the most common causes of moisture problems in homes.

Condensation

What causes condensation?

Condensation occurs when hot moist air hits the cold dry surface and that will cause the creation of droplets. This kind of moisture is found in the bathroom after a hot shower. Condensation on internal walls is more common in bathrooms and kitchens, where steam is produced by bathing or cooking, but it can be found on any roof of the house.

Homes are prone to the condensation issue especially in the months of winter. There is a large temperature difference between the air outside and the air inside the home which will cause the condensation to happen on the walls and windows. This will encourage the moss or mold to grow on the walls. There are some easier solutions available to end the condensation or avoid it in the winter season.

Exhaust Systems

This system helps all the hot air to go outside the house through the vents.
Dehumidifiers

A DIY solution to wet walls as this device will collect all the excess moisture in the room.

Ventilation Improvements

Adequate roof ventilation controls moisture level in the home and if you are having an improved ventilation then you should not worry about the condensation.

Leaks

The clearest cause of the leaks is the plumbing problems and almost every homeowner once in their lifetime or more than that have dealt with this. Moreover, there are also issues with water wielding devices such as washing machines, etc.

What else could let the water inside your wall?

Water can easily sneak through roof penetrations like vents, flashing, chimneys, etc. and it will cause the walls to get wet. If the flashing is falling or the masonry is cracked again then you would face the problem of condensation and leaks.

Leaks would be the first culprit if you ever see wet spots on the walls or ceiling after a storm. It is important to act fast when you see a damp wall after heavy rain because it can cause both short and long term damages to the home.

If there is heavy snowfall in the winter season the ice dams can be very troublesome. And if your gutters are clogged and the insulation is poor along with the poor ventilation then you are up for a big problem.

What are Ice dams?

If there is a snowstorm and the attic is not properly ventilated or insulated the snow will start melting due to the attic heat. This will make the snowmelt and it will go around the edges of the roof where there is still frozen snow and it will create a snow dam.

This long stay of the water at one place will cause it to start absorbing in the shingles and further to the layers of the roof till the deck. The roof will get damaged and you would have to get it replaced in the end. This is why ventilation and insulation are necessary for the homes.
