Why Choose Stainless Steel for Pipe Fitting Components

by Chris G. Work in Internet Business industry

Stainless Steel as in its present form was first invented in 1912, playing a major role across a host of different industries, namely the manufacturing and production industries. Particularly, when it comes to the various applications of pipe fittings, stainless steel has emerged as the most favourable material to use, in regards to quality, strength, durability, and cost.

Stainless Steel refers to a broad family of iron-based alloys containing a minimum of 10.5% chromium, which is mainly responsible for giving the material its “stainless” quality. It is also corrosion resistant; because of the ability of the oxide layer to heal itself in exposed air. This along with many other factors makes it the de-facto material of pipe fittings everywhere. Stainless steel pipe fittings suppliers everywhere are thus in high demand, as more and more manufacturing firms are looking to invest in stainless steel-based components. In this article, we will discuss several points as to why it has gained so much prominence in these industries.

·         High Degree Corrosion Resistance:  The most common forms of stainless Steel alloys consist of a variety of materials, each having their own degree of corrosion resistance. For instance, the lower alloyed stainless steel grades can resist corrosion in atmospheric and pure water environments, while high-alloyed grades can do the same even in acidic, alkaline or chlorine bearing environments.

·         Fire and Heat resistant: Because of the diverse nature of different piping applications in industries, which may involve the transfer of hot liquid or gas based substances, pipe fittings components need to be extremely heat resistant. In some cases, it may warrant a total resistance against fire. Stainless Steel is the perfect material for use in these applications, because of their tendency to retain strength and resist scaling even at extremely high temperatures.

·         Strength to weight advantage: Strength to weight advantage is a key factor while considering materials for pipe fittings. Once again because of the diverse grades found in the stainless steel family, allows for significant strengthening. The work hardening property of the austenitic stainless steel grades results in a high degree of strengthening of the material from “cold-working”.  The high strength duplex grades, on the other hand, allow reduced material thickness compared to other grades, which in turn results in significant cost-cutting.

·         Impact resistance: As mentioned earlier, stainless steel is highly strong and durable. Certain stainless steel grades which are used for piping components provide a higher degree of toughness, both in freezing cold as well as applications involving extremely high temperatures.

·         Ease of fabrication: Apart from the above-mentioned qualities, pipe fittings require provisions for a significant amount of fabrication. This requires the material chosen to be durable as well as flexible enough to withstand modern cutting tools and procedures. Stainless Steel generally can be handled easily, allowing it to be cut, formed, welded, machined and fabricated according to requirements.

Because of the highly favourable properties of Stainless Steel, it is the popular choice for pipe fittings all over the world. Several stainless steel pipe fittings suppliers can be found offering numerous variants for different industrial applications.
