Why Budapest Is a Worthwhile Jewish Vacation Destination

by Kosher River Cruise Kosher Tour Operator
When on a Jewish vacation in Europe, particularly the Central Europe regions, a stay in the city of Budapest in Hungary is certainly a given. It is often called the Paris of the East for its awe-inspiring city streets and architecture. And even to this day, Budapest is one of the brightest gems of the continent.

Aside from its impressive structures, Turkish baths, affordability, and other attractive attributes, there are more reasons why Budapest is worth the visit for Jews that are traveling in Central Europe:

Rich Jewish Heritage

Like most towns and cities in Europe, Budapest has a long history—spanning more than a thousand years—with the Jews that is marked with its own highs and lows.

However, what makes this city different from many others is how the Jews have lived together with the locals throughout the years. The Jews in Budapest had integrated well with the society there. They worked not just as merchants and craftsmen, but also as lawyers, doctors, and even as government officials.

Many of the Jews in Budapest would even consider themselves Hungarian first.

There were still instances of anti-Semitism—often when there was a change of rulers. But for the most part, they were better off than their fellows living in other areas of Hungary.

A Lively Jewish Quarter

There are about a hundred thousand Jews living in Budapest today, most of them spread throughout the city, not just in the Jewish Quarter.

Although many of the Jews don't live there anymore, there is still a sizeable Jewish community residing in the smallest district of Budapest. In fact, they have been influential in the revival of Jewish culture in the area. Plenty of kosher restaurants dot the district, making it a prime location for hungry Jewish citizens and travelers alike.

The Largest Synagogue In Europe

Budapest has 16 synagogues that are still in operation to this day, three of which are situated in the Jewish quarter. There are many notable buildings like the one in Kazinczy Street and  the Rumbach Street Synagogues. But the biggest attraction of them all is the Dohany Street Synagogue, built in the 1850s. It is quite literally the largest synagogue in the country and in Europe, and is also the second largest in the world. It has a seating capacity of nearly 3000.

With a staggering height of  143 feet, a width of 89 feet, and a length of 294 feet,  It is definitely not a sight to be missed.

For Jews traveling in Central Europe, whether by land or by traveling via kosher cruises along the Danube River, Budapest is certainly a city that they should explore.
