White peacock bird information

by Andrew R. Researcher

The peacock is famous for its magnificent display, which is both attractive and amazing. As rightly mentioned, white peacocks are domesticated in India, but they spread to Europe after the British Empire conquered India. Their charm and visual appeal result from their brilliantly-colored tail feathers that have eye patterns of small crystals.

Unlike peacocks of other colors, all-white peacocks are attractive and kept in captivity, which explains why they have the white color. Meanwhile, their white color should not be misconstrued as albinism. Peacocks of white color are not albinos because it is only their feathers that lack pigmentation, resulting from their being kept in captivity. Usually, peafowl in the bush do not have a white color that can expose them to predators. However, the color change occurred after years of being domesticated in homes and kept in zoos.

Due to its popularity, unique beauty, and history, the peacock has been declared India’s national bird. However, peafowl can be found in almost all countries of the world today. Peacocks are one of the most beautiful birds around. Read further to learn more about peacocks of an all-white color.

1. Identity

Many people use the term “peacock” interchangeably for both female and male birds. However, the males are the peacocks. The females are called the peahens. All the birds are called peafowls.

2. Distinguishing Features

The peacocks have long tails with beautiful feathers used for displays during courtship and mating rituals. Peacocks have longer tail feathers than peahens.

3. Diet

Peacocks are omnivores, eating insects, plant parts, and amphibians. They can also eat small creatures. They are popularly called ground feeders.

4. Geographical Distribution

It is important to know that India and Sri Lanka are home to blue peacocks. Java and Myanmar are home to green peacocks, while Congo peacocks are popularly found in the rain forests of Africa. Peafowl is distributed all over the world.

5. Size

The peacock’s tail is about five feet long, while the body length can be as long as 50 inches. A peacock's tail can measure up to 60% of its length when in a full train.

6. Habits

Peacocks can fly but would rather stay on the ground. A baby peafowl can fly short distances three days after hatching.

7. Display

The white peacocks form their tail feathers into a hand-fan-like shape. The beautiful white feathers have eye-like spots each, which are colorfully displayed. The display is crucial to attracting peahens and as a part of the mating ritual.
