Which Is the Best Packaging Material for Your Circumstances?

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

Chances are that you’ve learned a lot of things since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. But one of the things you may not have exactly expected to gain more knowledge about, is the wide range of protective packaging materials out there.

After all, amid lockdowns and other restrictions, a lot of us have been reaching for whatever empty boxes and other materials may have been lying around the house, and creating packages out of them to send through the mail.

You might have been doing that in order to get gifts to friends and relatives you’ve not been able to enjoy more direct contact with. Or perhaps you’ve now gone into business as an eBay or other online seller, and therefore now send goods to customers across the country and beyond?

Whatever – you probably sense what we’re getting at. The fact is, you may have been forced to get to grips with many more protective packaging materials than you ever thought you’d need to. But which will be the most suitable for you? Below, we look at some of the popular options.

Bubble wrap

We’ve cited bubble wrap first because, well, it’s the classic favourite. A lot of us grew up with bubble wrap, and loved ‘popping’ the bubbles. As we got older, we may have also grown to appreciate bubble wrap’s sheer versatility as a form of protective packaging material.

However, it’s definitely not perfect in this regard. Not only can it take up a lot of space, but it’s also not exactly an environmentally friendly material, due to the non-biodegradability of plastic.

Loose fill

Loose void fill is another type of protective packaging that many of us seem to know almost instinctively. As its name suggests, it’s a material specifically designed to fill the voids that can be left in a box once a product has been placed into it – for instance, if there are multiple items in the box, or the product isn’t exactly box-shaped.

Again, though, there are some obvious issues with void fill. Polystyrene void fill isn’t very eco-friendly, and it can be quite a messy packaging material that is bulky to store. Furthermore, even once void fill has been poured into a box, it might still be possible for the item to move slightly during transit. This makes it a less-than-ideal option for relatively fragile and easily damaged goods.

Tissue paper

This is a form of packaging material that compensates for some of the flaws the above-mentioned options have. It’s very soft, delicate and flexible, which allows it to be used for the packing of smaller items – such as mugs and glasses – without a risk of them being scratched. It can also be stuffed into smaller gaps than void fill and bubble wrap can reach, thereby enhancing product protection.

But… yes, there’s a but… tissue paper’s delicacy can also cause it to be easily crushed by heavier items, and not all tissue paper is even very good quality. You might therefore need to use it alongside other packaging materials in one box.

Shredded paper

Arguably a relatively ‘new kid on the block’ compared to other protective packaging materials, shredded paper has come to be appreciated in recent times for its versatility, toughness and often chic style. The latter can be especially true for you when you shop for it in various cool colours from a specialist store like ours.

However, not all forms of shredded paper are equally good for the packing and protection of your goods. A lot of people don’t necessarily realise, for example, that some forms of shredded paper aren’t greatly recyclable

That’s why it’s a good idea to look for shredded paper packaging that is made from 100% recycled material and 100% recyclable in turn, as we can offer you at Shredded-Paper.co.uk. In fact, we also hold certification from the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), to back up our credentials in this regard.

Don’t forget, too, that we don’t impose any minimum order quantity requirement on our shredded paper packaging, and that free UK mainland delivery is available. Feel free, then, to take a look at our formidable range of shredded paper options today, and to make the most of our highly competitive pricing – whatever you plan to use our shredded paper for!
