When To See An Orthopedic Surgeon

Orthopedics is the branch of medicine that deals with bones, specifically the corrections of deformities in bones and muscles. It’s a specialized field that takes many years of study before a physician can be considered a licensed and qualified orthopedic surgeon.

Unlike general family doctors, most people will not see an orthopedic surgeon in their lifetime. But there are some times and some situations that may require seeing this type of specialist. Anyone who has suffered an injury, disorder or deformity that’s related to the musculoskeletal system will want to see an orthopedic surgeon. Be aware that there are multiple branches in this field and you need to make sure that you’re contacting a specialist in the right branch of the field of orthopedics.

A few examples of the types of specialists that work in this field include pediatricians, sports medicine professionals, physical therapists, and rheumatologists. Even with all these specialties, it can be difficult to figure out when you shoot see this type of specialist. Millions of people deal with muscle, joint and tendon problems every year so you can be assured that you’re not the only one. These types of problems can cause chronic pain that can be difficult to manage. Sometimes managing the pain is not as effective anymore in which case the root of the problem may need to be determined. A specialist in orthopedics can help you figure out what the problem is, what is causing the pain and discomfort, and what can be done to make the pain go away permanently.

Most people don’t see an orthopedic specialist if the pain they experience is mild. But if the discomfort becomes significant or it’s interfering with your daily life, then it’s time to see a specialist who has had extra training in how the bones and muscles work. Doing so can have a huge impact on your overall wellbeing.

Other reasons why you may want to see an orthopedic specialist include:

  -  If you have difficulty straightening your spine

  -  If you have prolonged discomfort in your tendons, muscles and joints

  -  If you have a musculoskeletal deformity

  -  If you have any significant change to the way your musculoskeletal system works because of an illness or an accident.

If you’re not sure, it’s often better to get the consultation just to see if there is anything that can be done to correct the problem that you may have. Don’t worry about overreacting. Doctors have seen it all and will take a look at what you perceive as the cause of your pain and discomfort, and then let you know if the problem can be fixed, if the pain is indeed caused by a problem, and if anything can be done to fix the problem.

Orthopedics professionals will generally try to treat the problem with therapies that could be as simple as walking aids to as complicated as injected cortisone treatments. If none of these treatments work, the doctor may need to consider surgery. Sometimes surgery can be the absolute last option due to complications that could arise.
