What To Eat And What To Avoid For Dental Health

by Oxnard Dental Consultant

If you want to keep the mouth, the gum and the teeth healthy and strong, you should adopt a balanced diet which supplies the body with plenty of Calcium and vitamin D. calcium foods are easy for adults and children alike because dairy foods contain enough calcium so, having any dairy product three or four times a day can give you enough calcium. Other sources are available as well, including broccoli, green vegetables, orange juice with added calcium, tofu with added calcium and others.

Fluoride decreases tooth decay considerably by making the outer layer of enamel stronger and by reducing the bacteria which removes the enamel coating. The minerals which the teeth loss, fluoride replaces that too. You might not use fluoride water or the supply does not have fluoride content or even the local water might have less fluoride naturally. In other cases, the reverse osmosis filter which we use commonly, can reduce the fluoride content of the water considerably. In such cases, the paediatricians and the dentists suggest that you use toothpaste with added fluoride or have fluoride supplements or go for a fluoride treatment so that your teeth enamel is strong enough to fight against the tooth decay. Frankly, the bottled water supply doesn’t have the amount of fluoride which we need. Home water filters remove whatever fluoride is there in the water supply as well. That is why using a charcoal based or active carbon based filter is often preferable. These filters do not remove fluoride as much, compared to its counterparts.

However, too much of fluoride can also do more harm than good. The disease caused by too much of fluoride is called fluorosis. Fluorosis can mean white stripes along the teeth in preliminary stages but can cause the whole teeth to go extremely white like a chalk with a brown stain on it. If too much of fluoride is being taken, like having fluoride supplements while the local water also having too much of fluoride, or if fluoride toothpaste is being swollen, especially by children. It is better to have precautions and give fluoride toothpaste as much as the size of a pea to the children below the age of two. If the local water is fluoridated or the dentist doesn’t prescribe fluoride toothpaste, it is better to give the babies normal toothpaste. For children above the age of two, increase this amount just slightly. A local dentist in Westlake will know the fluoride content amount of the local water and he can tell you whether or not you need to use the fluoride toothpaste at all.

Sugars are the best when it comes to the bacteria production in mouth and often causes tooth decay. Unrefined sugar products, such as honey or maple syrup or molasses are not worse compared to the refined white sugar in this case, both of them are equally bad. Sticky sugar products, those which stick to the teeth after eating, such as the candy or the chocolate, are the worst offenders among these. Soda, sweetened juice and soft drinks wash the teeth with sugar so they are as bad as it might be. Cereals, popcorn's and other starchy foods leaves a residue which the bacteria can turn into sugar. So, if you are having any of these, brush within 30 minutes to protect your teeth.
