What to Consider When Looking to Upgrade Your Computer to a Better webcam

by Teja Sahib Smart Glass

There's no question that a webcam can make your online business experience better. After all, it's impossible to watch a sales presentation without some kind of visual aid. But the decision to upgrade to an upgraded webcam is often met with mixed reviews. A lot of people feel like an upgraded webcam is simply an unnecessary luxury, and that upgrading to a newer model would not really make a difference. So what's the real deal on webcam upgrades?

There are several different models of webcams available on the market today. Some of these are actually very good cameras, and some are actually less-than-ideal. And then, there are just about any number of models that are available for the less expensive models as well. This is why it's so important to look at the specs for the model you're considering when considering upgrading. Here are some things you should consider:

Resolution - The spec sheet you see for your upgraded webcam is always going to be pretty specific about the minimum and maximum amount of resolution your model can support. Make sure that the one you decide to go with is going to have at least 720P resolution for the best possible picture and sound quality. This is the highest possible resolution, your model can support. Plus, if you're going to add more monitors on it, you should expect your new webcam to support this as well. Plus, if you're using a laptop computer for your business, you'll want to make sure you're able to do all your business needs on this upgraded model.

Refresh Rate - Many different resolutions are available, but don't go over your bandwidth limit with one. Also, be aware of how many frames of animation are allowed per second you get. Many models offer up to 10 FPS, which is a lot. So don't go crazy and expect that your webcam can do more than that. A good rule of thumb is that you want at least 1 FPS and never go below it.

Battery Life - One of the most annoying parts of having a webcam is trying to get a connection with your laptop. Some models have limited batteries while others have low battery life. So make sure the model you choose has the right amount of battery life for you. If your model is going to run on battery, you might as well get the longest battery you can.

If you decide to upgrade, you need to take everything into consideration. You also want to remember that many models do not come standard with an SD card slot, which is necessary for uploading videos. If you plan to upload videos to a laptop computer, you may have to get an SD card separately. This is usually a small purchase, but it will save you money in the long run if your business doesn't use a lot of videos for streaming.
