The word “polka” itself derives from the Polish for “Polish woman” — in Czech, it translates to “little woman or girl. Starting in the years between 1830-1835, Europe and then the United States were struck by a dance craze originating with the Bohemian and Czech peoples of Europe. The new dance, the “polka, “was named after the Bohemian word “polka,” which means, simply, a Polish woman.

With the tide of European immigration to the U.S. in the 19th century, this new dance spread quickly and became wildly popular. The peak of the “polka” craze lasted for two generations from 1840 to 1890. In many areas of the country the desire to “polka” became so strong that polka clubs began to organize so  their members could satisfy their desire to engage in this trendy and spirited dance. Members were very proud of their clubs and, somewhere, someone came up with the idea of adopting a uniform pattern on clothing worn by women who were members of these polka clubs. Women chose a closely fitted jacket that was widely worn and made of evenly spaced dots placed on a field of fabric of a single colour to signify their membership in a polka club.

I really love the era of 1950’s  when Women really took the time to enhance their outer beauty from their hair to their makeup down to their Corset Dress. Everything in the 1950s got big! Big dresses, big skirts,  big accessories, and big personalities. Polka dot patterns grew big too. Extra large polka dot prints came on dresses and matching accessories and were at once the biggest fashion statement of the decade. Everything had polka dots. Women of all ages wore them too. They were no longer just for the young women’s population.

what the polka dot represents! A print that is bold and courageous yet soft and sophisticated enough to whisper to the audience that they have arrived and their presence is known! When wearing such a strong print… I admit, you have to be bold within yourself to wear the polka dot dress, as everyone will not be able to pull this look off. Confidence is a must with any print but especially when wearing polka dots. So become confident in whom you are and pull out that a polka dot dress!

If you wish to wear your vintage dresses but don’t want to look like you came out from your grandmother’s closet, put a spin on your style and wear it with modern twist . Vintage style dresses can easily be noticed as their delicate designs of laces, ribbons, pleats, stripes, and even vintage patterns make a statement.

Whether you are ready for them or not, polka dots will continue to get reinvented year after year, in a new retro way, with funky and mischievous twists. Polka dots might go down one season but they are never going to go out of fashion.
