When it comes to eyeglasses, people often give more importance to the frame of the glasses instead of the lenses. The type of lenses being used in the glasses take a back seat and everything seems to be about the frame, the color of it, it’s type, shape and so one. However, people fail to understand that out of the two, the lenses are more important that the frame, because your entire vision depends on those. There isn’t just one kind, and you need to know which kind will suit you best. Moreover, lenses differ based on what they’re made of and how they contribute to your vision, and also the requirements of your vision. So before you go out and buy a pair of glasses for yourself, based solely on the type of frame you want, you need to be schooled about the type of lenses that exist and what purpose each type has.

Based On The Material They’re Made Of

Over the years, manufacturers have used different materials for glasses lenses. Let’s give you an overview of each.

·         Glass. Despite their excellent capability in terms of enhancing vision, the glass lenses were termed dangerous due to their breakable and easily damaged nature, and were only used during the earlier days of lenses manufacturing.

·         Plastic. The material that made an appearance in the market, soon after the glass lenses, was the plastic. The CR-39 remains a popular choice for glasses lenses till today owing to its low weight, low cost and excellent optical capabilities.

·         Polycarbonate. This material was popular in demand because of it’s high safety factor and is still commonly used in children's glasses lenses for additional safety. It has a higher capability to withstand impact.

·         High-index plastic. Now this material has recently made an appearance in the market, and with its high refractive index, it makes the lenses lighter and thinner and is gaining popularity quickly.

Based On Certain Parameters

The above mentioned materials were chosen based on certain characteristics or parameters that they met.

·         Refractive index. The refractive index of your lenses defines whether the lenses will be thinner or thicker. If the refractive index is high, you can expect them to be thinner, and if not, then they will be thicker.

·         Abbe value. Chromatic aberration is due to a lower Abbe number, and is often concentrated in the periphery of a lens than in the center.

·         Aspheric. An expensive and more valuable option that improves not only the person’s vision but also reduces unwanted magnification of the said person’s eyes.

·         Variation in thickness. Depending on whether you have myopia or presbyopia, you will either have a concave or a convex lens to correct your vision.

Therefore, it is necessary that you give preference to the type of lenses over the type of frame when buying new eyeglasses, since the lenses are what correct your vision, not the frame. Moreover, instead of saving up on lenses and buying cheap ones, try zenni optical coupons that will reduce the collective price of the glasses for you.
