What is women’s health insurance?

by Kanika Shelatkar Insurance Consultant

Having some form of health insurance is absolutely critical these days because the medical costs in the country are rising at a rapid pace. Medical insurance provides protection and reimbursement from medical costs and hospitalization expenses.

When it comes to health insurance, policies are generally standard with the diseases that are covered such as critical illnesses. However, when it comes to women, there are specific diseases like cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, PCOD, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and other problems that need coverage in the health insurance plan. This is because there are many women who have health problems which either may not be diagnosed or they may not be covered under health insurance. Given the complexities of health problems these days, having some form of coverage for a woman is advisable.

Giving cognizance to this fact, many insurers have come out with special health insurance plans for women. These health insurance plans provide special support and focus to health problems specifically faced by women. Along with that, these plans provide compensation in case of birth defects for the child. Some of the common birth defects covered are spinal problems, down syndrome, congenital heart problems, cleft palate etc. These provide a form of lumpsum payout in case the child is born with any such defects. The extent of the defect and particulars are specified in the policy wordings. It is worthwhile to read through these wordings and get them vetted from a medical specialist to know what the policy offers and what it doesn’t.

A woman’s medical insurance cover is a focussed critical illness plan with additional critical illnesses specified that are peculiar to women. In case of a diagnosis for these illnesses, the policy will pay out a lumpsum amount to help with treatment.

Having medical cover specifically for a woman ensures that there is specific focus and coverage for illnesses that a woman faces. Apart from the specific critical illnesses, a woman’s health insurance policy is like a regular health insurance policy. It provides reimbursement or cashless treatment for any hospitalization and covers different pre and post hospitalization spends. However, some insurers may offer specific women only critical illness plans which provide coverage against diseases women are susceptible to be diagnosed with which pays out a lumpsum compensation. These critical illness plans are not health insurance or Mediclaim plans where you can get reimbursement of medical expenses. This is why it is important to read through the wordings of the policy to see what coverage the policy offers.

A woman’s health insurance whether it is a critical illness plan or a comprehensive health insurance policy gets a tax deduction under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act. The deduction amount depends on whether the woman buys it for herself or for her parents. In case of coverage of self or spouse, the deduction is limited to Rs. 25,000. In case the deduction covers parents, the deduction is available up to Rs. 25,000. However, if any of the women being covered are senior citizens then the deduction amount available is Rs. 50,000.
