What is the MOT test?
by roberts tyres EmployeeAn MOT test is a mandatory check carried out every two years on all vehicles registered in the UK. You need to book your MOT test at least 14 days before the date you want it done. You can also book online through the DVLA website. Your vehicle will get inspected by a qualified technician and checked against a list of requirements.
Once a vehicle is three years old, it needs to meet the government’s current emission and crashworthiness regulations. Car owners will need to go to a fully equipped testing centre, displaying an official blue sign featuring two white triangles. Each centre carries out a comprehensive inspection of every component of the car, from the engine to the driver’s door.
All aspects get inspected, including tyres, shock absorbers, airbags, suspension, steering system, and electrical components. Several factors affect the cost of MOT inspections, including the age and condition of the vehicle, the distance from the nearest MOT Martin facility, and whether the owner pays extra to have their car professionally valeted before the test.
How long does it take for the MOT test?
An MOT test usually lasts about 1 hour. However, if there are any issues with your car, then it may need to get repaired before the MOT test can start. If this happens, the test centre will tell you what needs doing.
What happens if MOT fails?
If your vehicle fails its annual MOT, then you need to go to a test centre to get it checked out. You also need to make sure you book in plenty of time because the test centre may not be available during certain times of the year. For example, if you fail your MOT in winter, you won’t be able to book it until summer. And, even though the test centre may not charge you for the MOT itself, you may still have to pay for parking. So, you should plan and book your MOT well in advance.
Your car may fail an MOT if any of the following happens:
- Your screen wash isn’t topped up.
- You drive around with stuff piled on the floor of the boot or cabin.
- Check that the wiper blades are not blocked by stickers or other objects. Wipers should be working properly. Windscreen wipers should wipe across the glass at least every two seconds.
- Your car may not pass its MOT if there are any problems with the registration plate. You should check your registration plate before driving away from the garage. If you notice anything wrong with the registration plate, contact the DVLA immediately.
- If your headlights aren't working properly.
- If there is a fault with your brake pads.
Checklist for MOT
- If you drive your car regularly, you need to check your windscreen wipers at least once a week.
- Check they are evenly spaced and that they wipe across the screen. Make sure your washer fluid reservoir is full and that the washers are also in good condition.
- Check the suspension on your vehicle. You should feel the springs when sitting on them and hear them click when you press down hard.
- Check the horn works and sounds clear. A weak or muffled sound indicates a problem with the horn. An old horn may need replacing.
- Check for exhaust leaks by starting your engine in a well-ventilated area at normal temperature, then listening from the rear of your car for any unusual noises.
- Fill your car with enough fuel and engine oils.
