What Is The Best Dental Implant Procedure?
by Harsh Arya Dental SurgeonA Dental implant is essentially a substitute for
a natural root & commonly it is screw or cylinder shape mead of titanium.
Each implant is placed into a socket carefully drilled at a precise location of
the intended tooth. Once fitted, these implants provided foundation for
long-term support of crowns, bridges or dentures.
If you are missing just one natural teeth, then
one implant is normally all that will be needed to provide a replacement. Larger
space created by two, three or more missing teeth does not necessarily needs
one implant per tooth, however the exact number of implants will be depend upon
the quality & volume of bone at each potential implant site.
Even if you have no teeth at all, you now have
the opportunity to have complete set of fully fixed teeth. With a certain
number of implants, decided by your jaw size & few other factors, fixed
teeth are possible precluding the need to the typical removable set of dentures
which are not only uncomfortable to begin with but highly inconvenient,
considering that they must be removed every night, stored in water &
cleaned outside the mouth.
a)
Who is suitable for Dental implants?
If you have good general health then dental
implants will almost certainly work for you. However, habits such as heavy
smoking can increases the number of problem associated with initial healing
& thereafter may negatively influence the long-term health of gum &
bone surrounding each implant.
b)
The role of X-ray & 3d Imaging in Dental
Implants
Routine dental x-ray show large amounts of
detail, but in only two dimensions. From these views it is generally possible
to judge the height of bone available for implant placement, however, more
advanced imaging techniques are sometimes needed to determine the equally
important bone width.
There are now number of advanced x-ray
techniques which allow your jaw bone to be looked at in all three dimensions.
One of most accurate technique is the 3d digital volumetric tomography (DVT).
Images obtain by DVT will show all of the information required about your bone,
including quantity & quality, but most importantly the presence of
anatomical structures that must be avoided.
c)
Is it uncomfortable when implants are placed?
Most patients will be familiar with the dental
anesthetics, used for routine dentistry & tooth removal, and will know how
effectively they are. Implants are placed using the same anesthesia. Depending
upon the complexity of your case, the operation might take anything from 30
min. for a single implant, to a couple of hours for complex bone grafting &
multiple implant placements. There is hardly any discomfort during surgery
& post-surgery for most patients, any of the simple pain killer you might
take for a headache will be all that needed for a few days.
Since the surgery normal involves exposing the
bone in the area where the implant and/or bone graft is to be placed you can
expect some minor swelling afterwards.
d) How long does treatment take?
For routine case, from the time of the implant
placement to the time of placing the first teeth, treatment times can vary
between 6 weeks & 6 months. The availability of better bone can be used to
decrease treatment time, while more time & care must be taken in poorer
bone, which can therefore extend treatment times beyond 6 months. In ideal
cases, the implants may be restored immediately.
During
the period of waiting-
You have to do just that – WAIT. You will not
needed to come into the dental office during this period & can continue al other
activities as before.
How
do I take care of Implants?
For most implant supported teeth you will be
Able to clean around each supporting implant by brushing & flossing in just
the same way that you would around the natural teeth & tooth supported bridges.
In some areas special floss, inter-dental toothbrushes & other cleaning
aids may be needed to maintain good oral hygiene. Cleaning is not at all
difficult, provided that you do not have impaired use of your hands.
How
long will the implants last?
During the period after the new teeth are
fitted, the success of each treatment stage will be the main factor determining
how the implants are performing. Once the implants are surrounding the soft
tissue are seen to be healthy and the new teeth comfortable & correctly
adjusted, it the quality of your home care & willingness to present for
regular maintenance reviews that will have most influence on how long they will
last.
Well maintained implants placed into adequate
bone can be expected to last for many years & probably for your lifetime.
However, just as you expect conventional crown, bridges & fillings to need
occasional repairs or replacements during their life time, your
implant-supported teeth may also have similar maintenance requirements over
theirs.
What can you do if an implant does not
work?
Success rates of an implant are more than 95%.
Even then, in the 5% chance of implant failing, it causes no discomfort &
if there are enough implant remaining, it may not be necessary to replace it at
all. Even if it has to be removed & restored, it can be replaced at a later
date.
(During the last 30 years the use of dental implants has changed dentistry beyond recognition. Implants are no longer considered experimental & it is rare to come across situations where they cannot be used at all.
